this is the network layer of Oracle, used to connect your DB to the world (or to connect to a DB elsewhere). It is used to establish a connection between a DB and a user or between 2 DBs ... what more can I tell you ... it is of course used by the listener !
So, to answer your question, there is no advantage in using SQL*Net : if your database will run only on your box, without any external connection, then you do not need this network part of Oracle, else you need it.

    Cool

    hi
sql * net was the erstwhile middleware product of oracle now it is being renamed as net8 .it si basically used by client applications like sqlplus, svrmgr, sqlworksheet etc to make calls to the databse.using this adds an additional overhead layer when querying the database.(just like ODBC in windows)............advantage is it provieds a layer of abstraction when using tools like sqlplus.
