    Question

    Hi,

    I have a script that performs "begin backup" and "end backup" for each tablespace. After all the tbs has been backed up, I perform a "alter system switch logfile" once at the end to synchronize all the header files.

    Lately, my reading indciates that I should be performing a switch on the logfile after each "end backup". Is this correct?

    Please let me know, so that I can modify my HOT backup scripts.

    many thanks

    I don't see any particular reason to switch logfile after each tablespace when taking full hot backup. One logswitch at the end should be sufficient.

    Thank you for your response, i needed some reassurance.

    i am not sure what the book was driving at;
    is it possible that, if the database fails during the time of my "begin backup" of one of the tablespace, the headerfiles will not be in synch???

    Yes, in this case your file headers will not be in sinc, but I still can't see any particular reason how switched log file would help you in this scenario. You would still need to restore some or all files from your previous backup and last needed redo information will still be still stored in your online log file instad of in switched and archived logfile.
