let say I have a complete backup of a database(system backup, not oracle backup) from 8.1.5

and my current database is 8.1.6.

should I be able to load this backup onto my current version?

keep in mind that these two are different set of database.

    thanks

    Thumbs up Backup

Yes, you can do what you are asking. After you you restore your 8.1.5 database files into your 8.1.6 the database will come up and be available. You should then consider running $ORAC_HOME\rdbms\admin\catproc.sql & u0801050.sql which will upgrade your DB from 8.1.5 to 8.1.6. (Note: run upgrade script before catproc)

yes, if your OS backup was done when oracle shutdown normal.

restore OS backup on seperate disk or directory (don't overwrite current db), export 815, import to the
    816.

    man..

    Damn, you guys are GREAT!!!

what will I do without this forum?? back to mail room perhaps.

I really appreciate the responds and the support that I'm getting from this forum. Since I discovered this forum, I haven't been anywhere else. Considering I spent most of my working days here..hehehe

I'm a new DBA, (I know what most of you are thinking, oh damn, that company is in trouble)..puehahaha(evil laugh).

We're an Informix shop, so I'm the only oracle guy here, and my support with oracle is non-existant. since I have no one to turn too, but the books and this forum, I'm much comfortable now then I was couple of months back.

    kudos to you...
