    Question

For Oracle 816 on Solaris 8, is there a way to shutdown and startup database automatically when I reboot the OS?

    Thank you!

I think there is a file called /etc/oratab under which you can submit the command for starting an oracle instance automatically.

Even otherwise you can call the dbstart utility (even your own script) supplied by oracle from the global profile file of OS.

For shutdown also you can try the same technique of dbshut utility.
    Thanx
    Ramesh.

Refer the oracle installation manual for the script. It had been given on the oracle installation manual, and it also walks you through the set up procedure. I have seen that the script to have cause problems on 8.1.6 and Reddy or some one had posted a fix to the problem. If you serch this forum for dbstart, you would come across that fix. Rest of the stuff had been well documented on the oracle 8i installation manual and follow through that and you would fine.

One correction here is that Oracle 8i places its oratab file under

    /var/opt/oracle/oratab

You have to be putting the default dbora script under /etc/init.d directory.
