    Unhappy

    I just installed oracle personal edition on a win 98 platform. everything seems fine but I cann't connect to the database. I get an error message (ODBC Test): there is no listener (but there is one for the database) Please help.

    Go to your services and start the listener. otherwise on the dos prompt issue

    lsnrctl start
    lsnrctl status
    This would start the listener.

    Control Panel ---> Services --->

    Under Service name see <SID>Listener is running. If not, Highlight it and start.

    Make sure you have your ORACLE_HOME is in the path. If you don't have you get bad command error message.

    Since I don't have a 98 system, I'm gussing this.

    start -> settings --> control pannel --> services
    |
    |--> Administrative tools --> services

    Other wise check the status of the listener from your MSDOS.

    Question

    but the only thing in any of these paths is the ODBC Data Source Administrator and that doesn't have any way to check on listeners and as I said under the ms dos promt these commands are not understood by the system. thanks for your efforts. I hate it. any other ideas?

    Hey, Do the following step by step .....

    1. Start Oracle database
    2. Goto DOS prompt c:> and type lsnrclt
    3. type start (enter)
    4. Listener should start successfully. In windows 98 this is the only way you can check listener. you can close dos windows after listener started successfully.
    5. What is the name of your front end tool.
    6. Goto Control Panel > ODBC and double click
    7. Select Oracle ODBC driver and follow instructions.
    8. After configuration you will get a window asking for service name ,username and password.
    Enter username = system and password=manager.
    Run Net8 easy configuration and create a service name also known as database alias (less than 8 characters).

    Any questions ?????? (have fun) !!!!!

    lsnrclt missing?

    just tried that. same problem: under dos c:> lsnrclt start does not work.

    dos returns bad command or file name for lsnrclt.
    is it possible that the program that is supposed to be invoked does not exist on my machine. I have downloaded the 8i Personal Edition from the oracle website and installed the typical installation no my win 98 second edition laptop.
