Hot Backup

we're running a hot backup script that has as a last step an alter system switch logfile command. When we run the script we receive the following error message ORA-00271: there are no logs that need archiving. I'm confused by this b/c I thought alter system switch logfile was forcing the logfile switch.

I don't think this error message is caused by your SWITCH LOGFILE command. I belive somewhere in your script you must have command ARCHIVE LOG NEXT/ALL or ALTER SYSTEM ARCHIVE LOG NEXT/ALL or something similar. You probably have automatic archiving turned on so probably by the time your comand is executed the archiver have already finished archiving the last unarchived redo file. In any case this message is more of the informative type, it is not realy an error.
