hi,
i am designing a database where i have a customer_master ,an employee_master and an user_master. my problem is that my users can either be emplyees or customers. what should the design for the user_master be ? can 1 foreign key attribute in a single table refer to 1 of the 2 different parent tables ? what would be an optimum design ?

You need 2 FK attributes in the USER entity - one for customer and the for EMPLOYEE.
