I am new to the ORacle DBA world. I have been maintaining
two oracle instances on a single server.
I have a new test sever and want duplicate one of these instances on the test server.
problems i've ran into-
when I installed Oracle 8.0.5 on the test server, it seems a defualt db was created called ORCL.
That's the name of the db I'm trying to duplicate.
I've moved my files over from the production box.
Oradim can't start the new instance.
Now i've got myself so confused, i'm frustrated.
HELP

How did you copy over your production files? is your production database running in archivelog mode and did you put the tablespaces in backup mode before copying (and take them out of backup mode after!!)?

Thanks for the reply.
The files were copied from the production cold backup.
The database i'm trying to duplicate is in noachieve mode.
-
oh, that's ok as well. i forget there are production db's that be shut down! you will have to move the datafiles, the control file, and the online redo logs from a cold backup, and don't worry about the tablespaces in backup mode. that's a whole different method.
what are the error messages you get when you try to open the database? what platform are you on?
-
We are on NT.
The srevices are started, when i go into svrmgr and connect,
it lets me in with my password.
when i attempt to startup the initorcl.ora the following error orruces.
ora-27100: shared memory realm already exists
osd-33939040: message 33939040 not found: product=rdbms80; facility=sosd
o/s error: <os 1> incorrect function

i'm afraid i can't help you. i'm a oracle-on-unix kind of DBA.
-
Well that doesn't help much.
anyone have any ideas.
I'm not sure what i've done wrong.
To recap-
NT platform
Trying to clone a production database on a development box.
Copied a cold backup to the new box.
At this piont, i cant get any furthur.
Keep running into the error mentioned in previous remark.
I've done some things here and there and now i'm stuck.
Does anyone know where i can find or can anyone provide a documented process for cloning a production db?
-
When you say that all the services are started is the oracle instance started? Can you log into the database using server manager as internal and query the database?
When you copied the cold back backup of production did you copy all parts (all datafiles, redo logs,controlfiles,intiorcl.ora,ect...)? Did the files go back into the same directory structure as on the production box?
