    Question

We currently have Oracle 8.1.6 installed on our unix machine. We are using the 8.1.6 client software to access Oracle. We want to update our version of Oracle to 8.1.7. My question is can we still use the 8.1.6 client to access the 8.1.7 version of Oracle on our Unix machine?

You can use lower version of client to connect to higher versions of database. You don't see much difference with SQL*Plus kinda product. But, there will be much difference if your (web) applications use lower versions and latest features might not be supported. This is specially tru for webabased applications.
