Thread: Global Tnsnames.ora

    Folks
    Im just wondering can we have a global tnsnames.ora file
    for all databases on network--like DNS entry for hosts file
    What i mean is for every changes on SID in development
    i have to go to every developer to modify tnsnames.ora
    is there anyway where all users in network can have one tnsnames.ora on server.
    Tamil,Pando,Halo could u pls advice on this

    Although I wasn't asked, I will still answer your question.

    Sure, you can have a global tnsnames.ora file. Create the tnsnames.ora entry on a common disk and create soft links to it in each developers environment.

    Or, why not install the Oracle client on a common disk?

    We have a common tnsnames.ora file on the network. As each developer/user logs in a script executes that checks to see if the tnsnames.ora file on their hard drive is older then the one on the network drive. If it is older it's replaced with the new one.

    another option is names server, you need some reading before set it up though. the other options are easier
