    Oracle 11g Server Hardware Choice

First of all I am a junior DBA who is transitioning from SQA to a DBA role. We have an old Sun V440 which we are running oracle 9i on. We want to upgrade the server hardware and move to Oracle 11g. I was told by datacenter management that we have only two options the Sun M5000 and the Dell R610. I am wondering if anyone knew which is the better choice (I am thinking about lobbying for a Dell R910).

Also what are the advantages or disadvantages of going with a SPARC VI or VII process vs some of the new Intel processors?

According to this most likely biased article Dell claims they are superior.

    http://www.dell.com/downloads/global...-specfp-en.pdf

I've spent time on http://www.tpc.org/ and http://www.spec.org/ but the configurations are so different it is hard to compare apples to oranges.

    Please help!

if i was you, i look into the below areas rather than reading some one's reviews about the hardware ....

why do we need to migrate? (resources exausted on the existing server or??)
what is the current work load on 440? (cpu, memory, I/O etc)
what is the expected load on the new server?
what type of setup we are planning (stand alone or HA)
what is the expected DB growth (in terms of number of concurant users / data)

    and so on .....

then deside what will be your new hardware.

    Thanks,
    Vijay Tummala

Try hard to get what you like OR you will be forced to like what you get.

The server is out of warranty in less than 1.7 years. Which means the datacenter will want it replaced anyway. I/O isn't a large issue. We have the money in the budget to spend it now. The current and future database hardware will be connected to a fast SAN. We plan to put the database in the data center in a rack, so I am not sure about your setup question. We are expecting data input to grow quite a bit, but not the number of users.
