    Choosing 10g upgrade method

    Hi-

We are planning to upgrade our 9.2.0.7 standard edition to 10.2.0.4 enterprise edition. I have a clear idea about the process that we needs to follow on database side but need some help on OS side.

Currently we are using Susie Linux and we are planning to buy Oracle Unbreakable Linux. So, can i choose the DB upgrade method either DBUA or manual? Metalink says ..

    Code:
When using the Database Upgrade Assistant or when performing a manual upgrade, you cannot migrate data in a database on one operating system to a database on another operating system.
    I appreciate your help.

    Thanks,
    Vijay Tummala

If you are moving to a different operating system may be you are moving to a different box -or not.
If this is the case I would install Ora10g, pre-create your database and then migrate the data resorting to old-and-good exp/imp.

Apperently, business do not like to go with export / import option because of the time constraint. I am looking into the following options.

Cross-platform TTS or Clone the DB using RMAN

I would like to see the experts comments.

    Thanks,

    Talking Datapump

You cannot use RMAN for cross-platform restore.

    I suggest:

    1) Upgrade 9i db on the server where it resides.
    2) Create empty 10g db on new server.
    3) Use datapump for export/import (with paralell option).

Is Oracle treat ' Suse Linux ' to ' Oracle Unbreakable Linux ' as a cross-platform? or as a same platform because both are same flavours?

    Thanks,

    How big is your database?
How long is your target migration window?

let me be more clear ... the 2 hours window is only for export - move the dump file to new server - and import.

    Thanks,
