materialize view

can anyone explain what is a materialize view?
is it a 8i feature or does it exist before?

Materialized views are used mostly on big tables,partition tables dss applications .

On big tables when you want max,min,average ,sum of certain values it takes a lot of times.

with Materialized views these things can be done pretty fater.

Materailazed views gater these datas and keep them on a snapshot. so when a querry asks sum(sal).

it takes the value from snapshot and gives the information.
Rather than sum all the values when the querry is proccessed.
