    Is 10gclient compatible with 9iserver?

    Hi,
We run oracle 9i server & 9i clients, however I',ve recently installed a 10g client one of my PC's and configured my

    TNSNAMES via the net configuration.
but, I keep getting the ora 12154 error.
I've replaced the tnsnames(and sqlnet too) with those of the other PC's running 9i client but still cant connect even

after tweaking it. I'm able to successfully ping the server though.
My question: Is 10gclient compatible with 9iserver(i know ther work the other way round)? If so ,any suggestions on

    what I might be missing?

ps see an my tnsnames below.
    Many Thanks

    In "9i" being 9i database RELEASE 2, with a ** recent ** patch, yes, it works : example, plus 9i inside a 9i home with client 9.2.0.8 installed :

    C:\Documents and Settings\jlchiappa>tnsping dwpan

TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 9.2.0.8.0 - Production on 31-JAN-2008 11:30:09

Copyright (c) 1997, 2006, Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Used parameter files:
    C:\O9IR2\network\admin\sqlnet.ora

Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = xyz.1.2.3)(PORT = 1521))) (CONNECT_DATA =
    (SID = PROD)))
    OK (0 msec)

    C:\Documents and Settings\jlchiappa>

    connecting with this sqlplus :

    SQL*Plus: Release 9.2.0.8.0 - Production on Qui Jan 31 11:25:35 2008

Copyright (c) 1982, 2002, Oracle Corporation. All rights reserved.

    Conected :
Oracle Database 10g Enterprise Edition Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production
With the Partitioning, OLAP and Data Mining options

Ops, sorry, re-reading the Q now I see, you want vice-versa, 10g client connecting in 9i db, right ? Is the same, IF the 9i db is 9ir2 with a RECENT patch, no probs :

    C:\Documents and Settings\jlchiappa>set ORACLE_HOME=C:\O10GR2

    C:\Documents and Settings\jlchiappa>set PATH=%ORACLE_HOME%\BIN;%PATH%

    C:\Documents and Settings\jlchiappa>tnsping O9IR2

TNS Ping Utility for 32-bit Windows: Version 10.2.0.3.0 - Production on 31-JAN-2008 11:36:15

Copyright (c) 1997, 2006, Oracle. All rights reserved.

    Used parameter files:
    C:\O10GR2\network\admin\sqlnet.ora

Used TNSNAMES adapter to resolve the alias
    Attempting to contact (DESCRIPTION = (ADDRESS_LIST = (ADDRESS = (PROTOCOL = TCP)(HOST = mach-2f1f54ba8.pan.com)(PORT =
    1521))) (CONNECT_DATA = (SID = O9IR2)))
    OK (30 msec)

    ==> connecting with 10g client in 9i db :

    C:\Documents and Settings\jlchiappa>sqlplus system/manager@o9ir2

    SQL*Plus: Release 10.2.0.3.0 - Production on Thu Jan 31 11:36:50 2008
