Oracle/SQL Server DBA

POSITION DESCRIPTION
Oracle/SQL Server DBA will be assigned to various projects supported by the team. Support responsibilities -
o Available 24 x 7 for production support via at least one communications medium - telephone, cell phone, text pager, e-mail - unless on an approved absence
o Non-production activities are normally handled during regular business hours
o Participate in scheduled off-hours maintenance activities
o Follow strict change management procedures.
o Escalate issues and problems to team manager
The DBA provides a broad understanding of the architecture and processes of the Oracle/SQL Server database server and interacts with both the system infrastructure and application teams to form a cohesive project team. The DBA performs job activities in a thoughtful and careful manner with the goal of providing uninterrupted database service to the application and user community within the defined system availability times. The DBA follow Oracle's OFA and all other team standards in all environments unless granted an explicit exception for each standard not followed.
The DBA activities will include the following -
o Install, upgrade and maintain database Server/Client software. Stay informed of Oracle/MS SQL Server/operating system patches for bug fixes and recommended upgrades. Recommend implementation of patches when appropriate.
o Create appropriate databases and database structures based on application usage. Work with database management software to determine ways to organize and store data for peak performance and system resource utilization. Recommend system resource changes as needed and to accommodate future growth.
o Define, implement, document and test database backup and recovery strategies.
o Define and implement appropriate utilities to monitor database functions and activity. Periodically evaluate database performance. Design and implement appropriate system security functions, such as, but not limited to, user id maintenance, password complexity and aging, and database user activity auditing.
o Develop and implement scripts for routine tasks, diagnose problems and remediate problems when they occur. Implement automated notification via email and/or pager when conditions require immediate attention. Archive and purge database log and trace files on a regular basis according to team standards.
o Work with Infrastructure team to automate startup and shutdown of database server processes.
o Contact database vendor for technical support when appropriate.
o Complete and maintain a defined set of documentation for each primary responsibility environment.
o Participate in discussions and meetings for implementation, upgrade or change of any environment with impact on databases. Coordinate various changes with team or project leads.
o Work with application teams to provide support for new applications including new database development, test environment refreshes from production, stored procedure development and SQL performance tuning.


ESSENTIAL SKILLS REQUIRED
Oracle DBA with active knowledge of 9i and 10g in Unix/Linux, Windows. Experience using Oracle utilities such as RMAN, OEM, Intelligent Agent, Grid Control, STATSPACK, Log Miner and transportable tablespaces.
MS SQL/Server DBA with strong knowledge of SQL Server 2000/2005 in Windows 2000, 2003 clustered environment.
Database replication experience and management required.
Experience with database backup and recovery, 24 x 7 support, periodic database maintenance activities, database performance tuning, and reading and writing Unix and Windows scripts. Good oral and writing skills for technical information.

NONESSENTIAL SKILLS DESIRED
One to four years of Oracle database support in production environment. Oracle Certified Professional as a Database Administrator in 9i or 10g.
One to two years of SQL Server 2005 experience in production and pre-production environments. Microsoft Database Certifications a plus.

INTERVIEW PROCEDURE
Phone interview for initial contact for internal transfer or external hire. Personal interview for external hire following initial screening of skill set.

ADDITIONAL COMMENTS
Required: Client-specific authorization screening processes required as condition of employment.
Desired: Data modeling and query tuning. Desire mature employee who can work without constant supervision.
