I a new dba learning/investigating my system.
How do I find out how many databases and what versions of Oracle they use.
In Unix you can do find . -name oratab -print. That command will find an oratab file which will list all of the databases, their Oracle versions with their associated ORACLE_HOME directories. Also, it'll show you if the database automaticly starts when the system is booted up.
Is there such command on NT?

In Task Manager, you will see processes by the name of Oracle.exe. Each process is a db on the machine. Use explorer to find out the ORACLE_HOME(S). Services in Control Panel lists the names of the dbs.

I guess its registry
HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\ORACLE\HOMEID`s

All installed Oracle databases are listed in the NT Services.
It also shows if the database is in Autostart mode.
Actually you may be able to create a database without creating NT services; in that case you may look into the NT Registry (run regedit on DOS) or look in the installation in the directory structure like --
d:\oracle\oradata\sid_name

If you ask me if is it posible create a DB without create Service, I would say no.
Maybe I'm wrong, I just can't imagine this process.
