Scenario Question 1

I crashed my own Sun workstation and had no way to test on my Oracle test database. So hope you can help me out on this.

1. You did a good cold backup
2. You blew off one of your redo log group (you had three groups)

Question:

Can you start up your database at all?

Sure, as long as your cold backup is complete, you should have no problem.

I don't understand. I thought this was a complete cold backup, no?

are we in archive log mode in this scenario? if not then you can recover your cold backup and forget about the online redo logs, in other words you will lose data unless your cold backup was made just before the crash

In that case, you can do an incomplete recovery through your last archived redo log.

If you bring your database up (the db before you recover) with the missing redo logs, it will probably will complain that "file xyz needs more recovery".

The best solution is to restore your cold backup, and perform an incomplete recovery through your last archived redo log.

1.If the shutdown was normal or immediate even if all the redo logs are lost.oracle will be able to start.
2.in the cold backup case also if you do not have the redo u can bring oracle up and running...
