I have a tablespace that has a datafile of 400m and out of which 300m has been used.
Assuming that I add another datafile (of 200m) to the tablespace, is the remaining 100m left from the 300m going to be used before the new 200m that I have added will be used?
I am thinking that if I go ahead and add the new datafile of 200m, then the 100m that is remaining out of the 400m will not be used.
Can any one please explain?

How much space will be used in the remain 100M in the first datafile is depandant on what's the size of the next extent .
For example , If Table1 suppose to grow and next extend are 120M , so the 100M is not enough and will not be used .
Check out the NEXT_EXTENT column in dba_segments view and You will know how the things going on ....

Hi
The priority of usage will go to the old file only and incase that space is not used for any reason liek extent_size etc or is not in autoextensible mode , then only the new file space will be used
