ASM and ORACLE-MANAGED FILES
Hi Friends,
Im migrating our database from 8i to 10g. While doing the intallation of 10g
I met these options to use ASM and ORACLE-MANAGED files. Would you
recommend to me to use these features? are they cool or a pain
in the neck to troubleshoot.
Thanks a lot

ASM is the future. Actually, street talk says Oracle is building a whole new O/S around ASM.
ASM provides "near" raw device performance and easy administration thru OEM
We have implemented ASM and we are very happy with it.
You can check Note:312731.1, which is an Oracle white paper that puts togheter 10g, RAC and ASM.

Oracle managed files won't change your environment very much, it'll just have Oracle do the file creation / naming / deletion. ASM changes more things, so you might not want to go to it yet if you aren't familiar with it.

Right, getting familiar one feature at a time would be a good idea. Both of these features are here to stay.

I mean if he is happy with the ease in ASM management or if it made
his database run fast

He is happy in general. That's the future and how do you live without it until now :-)
About the ASM, yes, the performance shoudl be better it stipes the IO.
About the management .. there is still what to be expected, but no serious problems. Generally, if you use RAC or you do not have hardware storage array, then definitely go for it , the benefit will be great
If running single instance with storage array, then the improvement will not be so significant
Cheers

Jen -- ASM gives us near-raw device performance -which makes us happy in a very easy to manage environment -which makes us even "happier" :-)))
