    Hi,
I am just comparing the benefits and maintenance, admin difficulties of using raw devices for Oracle 8i server on IBM AIX platform.
Are there any known performace issues in using JFS (default AIX file system) ?

would there be considerable advantage in using raw devices ?
    any suggestions would be appreciated.

    Thanks in advance.

Both raw and cooked filesystems have their advantages and disadvantages. Raw filesystems are typically faster for I/O operations. In addition, on many Unix platforms you can only use Asynchronous I/O with raw filesystems. However, raw filesystems are more difficult to manage (in theory) than cooked filesystems.

If you want to get near-raw performance with the ease of cooked filesystems, check out a product called Quick IO from Veritas. (www.veritas.com)

raw devices are in practice more difficult to manage. there is some discussion as to whether or not they are the faster choice now (they were clearly faster in the past), given the improvement in storage systems.
