Thread: Row Migration

    Post Row Migration

I'm looking at the description of Segment Shrinking in the 10g New Features book, and it says that Row Movement must be enabled for the table. Under what circumstances would Row Migration be a bad thing? I understand that it is slow, but does it have any other impacts?

I don't know of any adverse side-effects myself.

FIRST not row migration but row movement ( that's a bit different)
You will have problems if a FIELD of type ROWID in some other table, stores the rowids of the rows of the table you shrink.

OK, thank you. I thought I read once that it was a bad idea to store ROWID's to reference table, and that they are really only useful for very short term references. It looks like unless that construct is being used, there is no reason to leave row movement off.

At least I do not see any other reason. And... yes it is a bad idea, but that still does not means that noone does that :-(
