Rescue 8i Database from Files
Is there a way to access an 8i database (version 8.1.7) from the files themselves? I backed up the *.dbf, *.ctl and *.log files from an internet database server shortly before it crashed.
I can't get back into the server itself, and I need to provide the data to the client in some way that their database team can import into their own Oracle databases. But they say they can't recreate the database from these files?
The DBA that set up the original database has long gone, and I have only minor experience with Oracle.

You might have to resort to a tool such as DUDE.

Thanks David... would DUDE also provide them (the client) with some sort of schema, so that they can recreate the tables, triggers etc?

I'm no expert, but I believe that the complete schema would be recoverable. You'd have to check with those in the know though.

were the files taken when the database was shutdown or when it was still running?

The last post makes sence. Maybe you'll be able to open the database as usual.
About the rescue, I belive Oracle Consulting has a tool, to do that. It can generate dmp file or flat file. However, the only option to get that tool is to pay several consulting days to Oracle so it's a bit expencive
