what do you want to know specifically about it? I work in Europe so do a lot of other DBA's here.
    Oracle it's not just a database it's a lifestyle!

yes this is good advise "Read docs and books and practice..."

but you must do something in production system and feeling some stress.
you must encountered fail, error, crash face to face.
now i am a oracle developer, and i have worked oracle dba ,read, practice but not really system only my home database for 1 years.

i know that if you admin on your home database(example database) you are not junior dba yet.

Then the stress in not on you but on the business and on other DBAs..! Learn first before you put your hands on a production system. Developement / QA may be your next choice.. And production under an experienced DBA ( if you know the basics).

That depends on how fast you catch the fundamentals and bold enough to work on dev db's.

That may come in few weeks or months, even years too......

Assist your DBA and voluntarily take up tasks on dev db's will boost your confidence on being a Jr.DBA.

    Best of luck
