Is there any kind of "rule of thumb" for saving redo log files? Could I delete redo logs prior to my last cold backup? Or, should I just make it a habit to always keep all redo logs?

Thanks for any input anyone can give!

As far as backup and Recovery is concerned There is no Thumb rule .Everything has to go by theory and all steps to be documented and then tested for validation.

If it is cold backup and if the database is cleanly shutdown
(Normal and immediate shutdown). Then oracle with startup without redolog files also.It will infact create them.

As far as backup and recovery is Concerned do a document of all the procedures and test them.

Plus, it has something to do with the nature of your business. For instance, for accounting firm or banks, all redo logs might be needed for longer period of time. For some other firms, the recent redo logs might be sufficient.

When you ask about redo logs, you mean archived redo logs, correct? Because oracle can not live without online redo logs...
