problem connecting to a 9i db with a 10g client

I have a 9i database and I am trying to connect with a 10g client and am not able to. When I launch sqlplus and try to log in I get an ORA12154: TNS could not resolve the connect identifier specified. when I go through the Local Net Service naming configuration wizard to set the service name I test them and the test succeeds. but then when I try to log in with sqlplus I get the error. Any advice?
