We are moving our Oracle databases to a new server. We have Oracle 7.3.4 on the first database to be moved, 8.0.4 on another and 8.0.5 on others. Is it better to go to 8.1.7 or 8.1.6 at this point?
Any advice appreciated.
Thanks

Definitely 8.1.7 for a couple of reasons:
1. 8.1.6 is buggy
2. 8.1.7 is more stable
3. 8.1.7 has more features

I presume that 8.1.7 is an incarnation of 8.1.6.3.0, with some added functionalities. But I not sure the extent is it bug free, b'cos I just got released into production market.
One of the other issues is that if 8.1.7 is to have any bugs, the fix might not be immediate, where as if there is going to be some bug on 8.1.6 it would be pretty quick, b'cos it is being used by many.

Actually, 8.1.7 came out a couple of months ago, before 8.1.6.3 hit the streets. The new 9i app server is based off the 8.1.7 code, so I would suspect that bugs would get fixed there pretty quick as well.
I am sure 8.1.6 will be end-of-lifed around 12/31/2001. If you're upgrading anyway, why upgrade to something old?

That's a good point. I'll buy that :)
