SVRMGR> MGR-11401: input error, unable to read input line

I am trying to stop/start oracle database in an HPUX server using a script and it works fine from command line. But if it's run as pre/post backup script from the backup application it fails with the following errors

11401: input error, unable to read input line
MGR-01508: unable to close the current file

I have searched in google and found out the cause and workaround. The reason for this is the svrmgrl version that we use 2.3.4.0.0 is giving the problem and if I use svrmgrl version 2.1.4.0.0 it works fine.

I wanted to use svrmgrl version 2.1.4.0.0 in our production server to start/stop the database but our DBA says that if I try this the database might get corrupted. (database is 7.3,4). Could someone tell me if ther is any risk in doing so.

whats the script look like - might be able to make it better.

As for the corrupt bit will find it hard to get an answer on that as 7.3 is so old now and not many people will have it
