8i and Before versions - Oracle Parallel Server (OPS)
9i and after versions - Real application clusters (RAC)

they are the same except for the name

they are not the same, they are significantly different in how they work / operate / requirements.

Look up cache fusion - that is the main big big difference

Ofcourse higher versions/upgrades does have some additional features added.

cache fusion - in 9i you can trade blocks across a high speed interconnect where in 8i you had do so from the file system ( much slower)

in 8i you had to write your apps around OPS (so no SAP, PS etc)
so that they would partition data access across nodes.
