What can be max databases on Sun Fire E2900 server with 24 1.35GHz processes?

Hello,
I have a question – what is the largest number of oracle databases run on a Sun Fire E2900 server, with 24 1.35GHz processors and 48GB of memory. These processors are Sun's new dual-threaded CPUs, sometimes called dual-core. Each oracle database will have average of 512 MB SGA and average 800 processes. Only oracle will be running on the server, no other applications.
Please share your thoughts and experience.

How big is your swap file? Why don't you start with, how many applications do you need to support? There is a certain amount of overhead for every instance. Just because you might be able to support 48 instances on a box, doesn't mean that you should run 48 instances on a box.

Hey for creating record you can have as many db's as possible, but they alll have to take the load and keep functioning effectively and space for future growth?

Collect statistics testing on the test bench to achive the best possible for your config............

It also depends how you want to split the resources too? For example with the option of container in Solaris 10, one can have multiple VM (i.e. not exactly). Also the tyoe of storage, if your I/O becomes a bottle neck, then your cpu will be wasted

So, there is no rule of thunb that would fit all cases

Only oracle and os will be running on this server. It will be a shared oracle server so we don't have an answer on how many applications we need to support.

its nothing to do with the number of database, its the load and number of apps connecting. Something you dont know yet so you are just pulling numbers out of the air

Ideally, I would like to run one instance on one server so that I can measure CPU and disk IO performance correctly.
If you want to add more than one instance, then benchmark the system carefully.

Taken from Oracle Store website:

You are licensing the Oracle Database Enterprise Edition for 1 computer which has 2 processors. How many processors do you need?
(1 computer x 2 processors) = 2 processors for each program that you license for this computer.

Not sure if I am reading that right, but does that mean you would need to purchase a 24 processor licence for every program (application?) you run on that box? That would be a SERIOUS amount of money. Why don't you spec your requirements for each application individually, then buy a box for it's own needs? That way you know you aren't buying more than you need and you aren't going to be introducing the potential for scalability\contention issues later down the line?
