Oracle licensing on Xeon server
Hi
I intend to purchase an Oracle processor license for a multi CPU system
Oracle states that a CPU with dual core is considered as 2 CPUs
But with Hyperthreading, the Intel Xeon has one core that runs as 2 CPUs
Do I require 2 CPU license for the Intel Xeon?
Oracle web site did mention about multi core CPUs but does not mention anything about Hyperthreading
-
My understanding is that hyperthreading is licensed as a single core.

Oracle changed licensing for Dual Core, you multiply by 1.5 CPU instead of 2

True, however you have to round the decimal result to the nearest upper integer. So, for a single dual core processor you must have two processor licenses (1*1.5=1.5 => roundet to 2), while for two dual core processors you have to pay three processor licenses (2*1.5=3).
Processors with hyperthreading are considered as a single core processors.

thanks for the feedback
so a hyperthreaded processor is considered as a single CPU

Yea, whatever.
In a rare show of humility, Larry admitted at Openworld the licensing model for multi-core processors is FUBAR. He almost drew a standing O!
I wouldn't be suprised to see (revenue generating) changes in the licensing model in '06.

My advice. Pay the piper, tip generously, and complain to those that can effect change.

It allready happened! For Sun Niagara chips (4, 6 or 8 cores per chip), Oracle will charge it's licences with factor 0.25 for a core, as opposed to current 0.75 factor. In other words, for those 4-core chips you'll pay one processor license, for 8-core chips you'll pay as for two processor license.

dammet Jim.
I'm a doctor, not a processor core licensing mathematician!

Have you heard the Bones quote, "Dammit Jim, I'm a doctor not an escalator!"
