    ASM Doubt

    Hi all,

I have been reading about ASM new features in 10G and have some questions:

basically, the whole purpose of ASM is Stripping, mirroring, Online storage Reconfiguration and dynamic rebalancing, managed file creation and deletion.

the question is: if you already RAID array on your DISKs, so why do you need to implement ASM???? what's the pros and cons???

    thanks so much

Does your RAID do dynamic rebalance? No

Does your RAID manage your datafiles automatically? No

I have seen dynamic IO load balance on EMC DMX.

What level of automatic management do you expect from RAID?

Let's say if the company only had 2 RAID array (RAID 1 for controlfile, redo and temp, system and RAID 5 for all datafile). How ASM will be applicable to this scenarios????

Do I still be able to set up DISK group 1 with all the Physical DISK (1 to 5)vaiable on the server???? and disk group 2 would be (6 to 10) and let RAID array controller do its owns things ????

I am a bit confused here.
