Use of ASM
Hello All,
Anyone having 'not-so-good' opinion about the new 10g feature "Automatic Storage Management" ?
Any operational difficulties faced ? BUGs uncovered ?
If you find the feature to be useful one, how ?
Thanks

SVK,
I'm a big proponent of ASM. We've been using it in our test, qa and production environments since about a month after it was released. It has performed flawlessly.
Issues:
1. If you're using ASM, OMF and RMAN, duplication has a problem creating unique filenames. A patch is available.
2. Automatic startup needs to start the ASM instance first. Get a new dbstart and dbora for this issue or put it first in your oratab file.
3. You have to use RMAN to backup ASM datafiles (unless that's changed in 10.2)
Cool stuff:
-Balanced IO (striping)
-Failover (mirroring)
-DBA can add/remove disk space without a sys admin
-On the fly rebalancing (way cool)
-Use a cheap array of inexpensive disks and get very expensive and in some cases labor intensive features.
