Hi,

So, our company acquires a sqlserver based company, and we inherit their databases.

So, having being an Oracle DBA for 7 years, I need to learn new tricks...

Yes, we could port the databases over to oracle, but that's not gonna happen soon.

So, for those of you who have experience of being dual rdbms DBAs, I'd appreciate it if anyone could recommend a good book for Sqlserver DBAs

I've asked in SqlServerCentral.com, but their being miserable.....

We're 75/25 Oracle/SQL Server.

"SQL Server 2000 Resource Kit"
and
"SQL Server 2000 Administrators Companion"

Neither are light reading. They're big, heavy and very detailed. They're geared to the "IT Professional" and are definately not "for dummies" books.

Of the two books you mention, which is more suited to day to day DBA work, as they're probably expensive ?

You're going to love SQL Server...

You could start by reading Dilbert. You could also just open the gui and start clicking. Eventually something good will happen. If not you don't know me. Also if you get really stuck, I mean really stuck, start right clicking!

Generally, schema's are databases, let dbo own everything, and learn the wizards. There isn't much to SQL Server. It is based on the Sybase database, but the code split 10 years ago or so. Make sure you upgrade the SQL Server 7 databases to 2000, as soon as you can.
