    RMAN test

    Hi all,

    I have been reading and teting about RMAN. Anyway, below is what I have :

    RMAN> show all;

    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'd:\rman_test\3\
    control_%F';
    CONFIGURE DEVICE TYPE DISK PARALLELISM 1; # default
    CONFIGURE DATAFILE BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE ARCHIVELOG BACKUP COPIES FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 1; # default
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 1 DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXPIECESIZE 100 M;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 2 DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXPIECESIZE 100 M;
    CONFIGURE CHANNEL 3 DEVICE TYPE DISK MAXPIECESIZE 100 M;
    CONFIGURE MAXSETSIZE TO UNLIMITED; # default
    CONFIGURE SNAPSHOT CONTROLFILE NAME TO 'D:\RMAN_TEST\1\CONTROL_%U';
    RMAN configuration has no stored or default parameters

    --backup command

    RMAN> run
    2> {
    3> allocate channel c1 device type disk maxpiecesize=100m format 'd:\rman_test\1
    \RMAN_%U';
    4> allocate channel c2 device type disk maxpiecesize=100m format 'd:\rman_test\2
    \RMAN_%U';
    5> allocate channel c3 device type disk maxpiecesize=100m format 'd:\rman_test\3
    \RMAN_%U';
    6> backup database plus archivelog;
    7> backup current controlfile;
    8> backup spfile;
    9> }

    When I am trying to do the recovery, I got some errors:

    D:\RMAN_TEST>rman target sys/manager

    RMAN-06172: no autobackup found or specified handle is not a valid copy or piece

    BTW, when I only do

    restore controlfile

    it's working just fine and I was able to restore the controlfile.

    How come it doesn't find the autobackup ??? I am missing something here.

    thanks,

    Can you list the autobackups of the controlfiles in 'd:\rman_test\3\
    control_%F'

    Do they physically exist in that directory?

    thanks, please see the below:

    RMAN> show all;

    RMAN configuration parameters are:
    CONFIGURE RETENTION POLICY TO REDUNDANCY 1; # default
    CONFIGURE BACKUP OPTIMIZATION OFF; # default
    CONFIGURE DEFAULT DEVICE TYPE TO DISK;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP ON;
    CONFIGURE CONTROLFILE AUTOBACKUP FORMAT FOR DEVICE TYPE DISK TO 'd:\rman_test\3\
    control_%F';

    and they controlfile does exist in the specify location, that's why I don't understand what I am missing.

    I'm out of ideas then. If a) the controlfile was indeed autobacked up b) they physically exist c) the DBID specified during the restore is correct d) you specify the right channel, the "restore controlfile from autobackup maxdays 100" (or whatever maxdays) should work.

    Since you're doing a test, I'm sure you could paste the backup logs where these controlfiles got backed up. I assume you still have the original database intact - so paste a "list backup of controlfile completed after 'sysdate-10';" --- Show that the pieces exist in the controlfile. Thirdly, paste the list of controlfiles in that directory (make sure windows doesn't plug a suffix to it or something!).

    I'm sure you've verified most of this..but I just want to be doubly sure.
