    Memory

I am using oracle 8.1.7. I have an application that uses up to 400MB of memory on the oracle process when documents are being processed, but this memory is not released when processing finishes.
As a result, users of the a performance degradation. Has anyone had such an experience and suggestions on what to look at for to troubleshoot.

    Thanks in advance

Is it not releasing memory while running? Does it release it's memory after it's ended?

Are you sure this isn't a disk i/o issue?

Any chance you've got a test server you can play on that looks anything like this production server?

Is the app defining cursors and not closing them?

Is it home-grown app (Do you have access to the source code)?

I had a similar problem on a Windows server where memory added to the ORACLE.EXE when a user process starts was not released fully even after a shutdown!! Microsoft = reboot. My issue didn't result in performance degredation though, it just meant the ORACLE.EXE grew larger and larger every day until no-one could log on. Without more info I can only guess thats what you are talking about...

    waitecj,

I am getting something similar, the oracle uses lots of the os memory when the application in question starts proceesing. When the processing finishes the memory is not released. There are other applications on this box. These users then suffer performance degradation

    Thanks
