Allocate new extent in LMT and DMT

There is a difference in allcoating a new extent in oracle 8 (DMT) and oracle 9 (LMT).

In DMT, a new extent can only be allocated when there is enough contiguous space in a block. This is true even though the total freespace of the tablespace can accomodate this new extent

However, LMT can come to the rescue. If the new extent cant be allocated in a single block, and the total freespace of the tablespace can accomodate, then it will be spread across the tablespace with AUTOALLOCATE being in the picture

yls177, you certanly need some additional reading on the subject. Concepts Guide would be a good start.
