    TSM and RMAN on Solaris

    Hi,

Has anyone configured TSM with RMAN on 8i before?

I've got a couple of queries regarding TSM and RMAN.

Can RMAN on 8i work with TSM only, I mean without installing TDP?

    I'm new on TSM.

Is TDP the same as in NMO in Legato?

    Cheers

RMAN can not communicate with TSM without TDP (Tivoli Data Protection) If you do not have it you have to either send your rman backups to tape directly or send them to disk and keep them on the disk while TSM will backup them up as just any regular files.
Also, your restore will have to be more complicated without TDP. The trouble is that rman repository will store a location of backup files on the disk and you will have to manually restore them to the same disk location first.
My personal opinion, go with TDP if you have a choice. TSM is much mor expensive product than TDP and I do not see any logic having one without another.
One, who thinks that the other one who thinks that know and does not know, does not know either!

    Hi BV1963,

    Thanks for the sharing.
Your explanation is clear and concise.

I understand it now. TDP is just like NMO in Legato.

    Oracbase -
TDP is much more cumbersome with 8i than 9i - basically due to the improvements in RMAN in 9i. I have worked with TSM/TDP/RMAN for 4+ years - with 8i & 9i. Send me a private message when you get around to installing/configuring this. I can send you some information that will save you loads of time.

    Jodie
