    No of PROCESSES exceeded.

Got a 3rd party app that accesses 2 DBs, one direct and one via a link.

The app threw up an ORA-00020: maximum no of processes (%s) exceeded

    (a) A quick look in v$process showed only 40 processes active in the main DB, 12 in the linked DB. The init.ora processes param was set to 150 in 1 DB, 50 in the linked DB.
    (b) there are no entries in the alert.log of either DB re. this 'error'.

Should the (%s) in the message show the actual value of the processe param? (which would give me a clue as to where the problem originates)

Any ideas as to whether the error is accurate? Could something other than the number of processes be causing this?

What are the disadvantages of upping PROCESSES to, say, 300? (ie an arbitrary high figure that we will probably never reach).

PS Oracle 8.1.7 on Windows NT4

Increase PROCESSES parameter value. There is no harm.

I would suggest that you increase the number of processes especially on the linked db. When you say 40 processes, does that include the oracle processes as well?

    Yes, includes Oracle processes.
Very little direct user access to the remote, linked DB: 6 or 7 concurrent sessions.
