I'm having problems installing Oracle8i 8.1.6. Enterprise Edition on a NT 4.0 Pack 6a server.
I'm installing as system administrator. The Universal Installer runs OK till the Database Creation process gets to the database initialization step where errors begin to occur.

    Errors:
    ORA-01503 Create controlfile failed
ORA-00200 controlfile could not be created
then a cascade of associated errors, some indicating the database could not be mounted.

The TNSlistener service will not start using NT services or manually using lsnrctl.

I've tried installing several times, each time doing a clean machine deinstall prior to reinstall.

I've changed the Global DBName using the full domain name, and variants. I suspect there may be problems with the listener.ora and TNSnames.ora files. I also changed the host name from the alias to its DNS numerical equivelant.

    Will appreciate any suggestions.

First I'd check the initSID.ora file and determine where it's trying to create the control files...
Then verify that it is possible to create the files there.

The init.ora file directs the control files to e:\Oracle\Oradata\SIDdir.

This directory is writable and several files exist created by install.

    indx01.dbf
    Rbs01.dbf

Check you patch where you want create control file. And
check obvious things like disk space, quotas, etc.
