lincense issue
Hi Friends,
We got an Oracle 10g db lincense(30 named users) for AIX 5L.
I want to use only 15 users for AIX and the other 15 i want
to convert to windows. Is this possible?
Does Oracle checks if u have more user what was licensed?
Thanks

its done on trust, but call oracle and say you want it, chances are they will do it for you.
As it stands you can't as windows is unlicensed

Assuming you meet the per processor minimums...

Hi kris123 -
I just noticed you are running 10g AIX 5L. I just found out the hard way that I needed to apply patch IY59082, which is not mentioned in the install guide. The database will freeze and you cannot kill the processes. I tried 'kill -9' and 'ipcrm -m' and nothing worked. The only resolution is to restart the server to get the sga out of memory. We have a p690 with 6 other 9i databases on it so the load was heavy. The metalink note is 285158.1 if you need it. The problem is on AIX 5.2 using jsf2 filesystems and a heavy load. I was lucky enough to qualify in all these categories :-(

whats that got to do with license questions?

it had nothing to do with it. Just trying to be helpful. Is that ok on these boards or should I only post information related to the thread topic?

You don't need to "convert" any license at all. You have 30 named user licenses and those named users can use their licenses on any number of your databases on any number of your servers. So yes, you can have your 30 users on your database running on AIX and at the same time you can have all those 30 users on your database running on Windows. Assuming, as Jeff said, your servers meet the per-processor minimums for named users.

Thanks for all the comments,
But im i little confused. Correct me. Jurij dear, do u mean that if we bought 30 named-user license on AIX (Oracle gave us the AIX cd installer pack). I can also run another 30 users connecting to a
Windows DB Server, another 30 users connecting to a Linux DB server,
and another 30 users connecting to HP-UX DB, so a total of 120 user
connections to 4 different servers?
For psychofun...thanks a lot for your help honey...keep up the
good work. So u mean i need to install the AIX patch IY59082.
As of now im still on test phase. Dang! I always encounter this
sqlnet connection error everytime I install new DB server.
My current problem is sqlnet connection error. I know its a simple
problem but it just made me crazy.

So long as the 30 named users are the same users (Actual REAL people!)on each database. Hence: "NAMED USERS"!!!!!.
Its impossible for Oracle to monitor this, so it is all on trust.
We run STANDARD EDITION PLUS with 100 named user licences. These 100 actual real human beings use the licences to connect to 3 different databases (each with 100 Oracle user accounts). So thats 300 accounts but its satisfied with 100 licences.

Thanks dear I wonder if oracle got anyone jailed yet for exceeding
the limit.
