    It's that man again

Time names President Bush Person of the Year.

    . . . .

Some selections have been notoriously unpopular, such as Adolf Hitler in 1938, Joseph Stalin in 1939 and 1942, and Iran's Ayatollah Khomeini in 1979.

    goes with.......

The winner must be "the person or persons who most affected the news and our lives, for good or for ill, and embodied what was important about the year, for better or for worse,"

What's the story with Time and Life? From the way people talk about their covers you's think that they were some kind of bastions of world-class print media, but they're actually crap -- about one step away from gossip rags. Did they used to be good or something?

I would say that they were a good magazine 25-30 years ago. The beginnings of you are referring to was probably 20 years ago. During that 20 year period they were still somewhat openly respected. I wouldn't put them NEAR the gossip rags though.

Then again you may be correct, any magazine that pick Bill Clinton three times clearly has their heads up their ass.

Uhhh, well I wasn't making a political point -- just wondering why anyone gives a toss. They always choose the just-elected president as the man of the year, no? So what's the big deal?

Of course there is that whole Hitler/Stalin thing -- that does make it funny. What would be really good would be if Saddam Hussein had been man of the year, for "services to democracy in the middle east" or something.
