    Speed if file is Compressed

    I am Using ORCALE 8i on Windows2k Server.
    If i Compress the datafile/s to save the harddisk space,it will effects on the speed of oracle operations ?

    you wanna zip files up - and you think oracle will work after that or am i missing something here

    You are talking about OS compression I guess. Oracle bypasses the OS data access methods - I'd be amazed if it worked.

    Not zip files up, but compress the directory, I assume... or at least, I hope.

    If so, then I have done that on a test box with no performance side-effects... but I wouldn't dream of doing it on a live server. If your company values their data, I would tell them to buy more disk. Its cheap nowadays y'know.

    Ah, just noticed the version he's using, i.e., 8i

    So you need to upgrade to 9ir2 to use this.

    Which so ever might be the compression algorithm, its obvious that the decompression process would take its time as against retrival of data without compression.
