Migrating to 9i

Folks,

I have a DB running on Oracle 8i on Server1. I need to move everything to new server which runs Oracle9i. Could anyone give me overall process to be followed? Thanks in advance.

I can create users and do import/export but wanted to find out if there is any efficient method than this.

Don't think you ever find him asking how to upgrade a database to 9i because they are too lazy to find out for themselves

Upgrading can b done in any of the following way,

1> export/ import as u have mentioned...the mostly used method i beleive.
2> u can use the migration assistant GUI
3> u can run the script in the location /rdbms/admin/u0800010.sql (in general the name of the script is like u(old_release_number).sql or u can prepare a similar script by urself and run that.

re-read the original question, migrating from one server to another.
Wont be using the migration tools or scripts for that

Hi.

The migration usually requires both versions of the software to be present to work sucessfully. I hate loading old software if I don't have to.

Also, migrations usually leave a load of rubbish behind in the instance.

I always go for the export/import route, maily because you can always do a quick fallback to the original instance if something goes wrong. It does require extra time and disk space, but it gives you a warm fuzzy feeling to know everything is going to be OK ;-)
