    universal installer

    Hi,

I am trying to use oracle installer on 8.1.7.0 using ./runInstaller.
However, it seems it doesn't exist. Any suggestions? The document says to use CD from base install. Could you please tell how it could be done?

Do you have the 817 cd? or are you trying to run the installer where you already have 817 installed?

    Hi,

I was trying to install it where 8.1.7 was installed.
I don't see it in $ORACLE_HOME or $ORACLE_HOME/bin. It doesn't seem to exist. I am on HP-UX at a remote location. Could you outline the steps for installing from a CD?

Why are you looking in ORACLE_HOME and in ORACLE_HOME/bin? Not there. Did you look in oui?

if you installed the installer then it will be in oracle_home/bin (which links to the oui) if it isnt there you didnt install it.
So you will need the oracle cd to install it

Running the Oracle Universal Installer After It is Installed
The Oracle Universal Installer is installed on your system during the installation of your Oracle products:

    On NT: \Program Files\Oracle\oui
On Solaris: it is at the same level as oraInventory
A new version of the Oracle Universal Installer replaces its older version.

The Oracle Universal Installer is placed under "Independent Products" in the Inventory panel as a "non-Oracle Home" product because it maintains an inventory across all Oracle Homes.

To run the Oracle Universal Installer:

On Windows platforms, select Start=>Programs=>Oracle Installation Products=>Oracle Universal Installer.
On Solaris, execute ./runInstaller from the area where it is installed.

For example: if the is /u01/oracle/oraInventory; then, the Oracle Universal Installer will be at /u01/oracle/oui

When the Oracle Universal Installer is first run/installed, it checks for the JRE path (the location where it is run from), using the location specified in the oraparam.ini file. If the JRE does not exist here, the Oracle Universal Installer looks for a local JRE.

That's "oui" at the same level as oraInventory, not the oui in the oraInventory directory. How to use the CD? Insert the CD and invoke runInstaller.

This refers to typical installation, not a custom one.

I haven't done an install on HP in a long time, but which window/checkbox/option is it you select that answers the question of "Do you want OUI installed for you and then linked to runInstaller in the oui/install directory from your ORACLE_HOME/bin directory?" I'm using iAS, iDS, Forms 6.0, Forms 6i, 8.1.6, and 9.2.0.1 and absolutely none of these products asks about installing OUI (or not).

Forms 6.x creates an ORACLE_HOME/orainst directory and does not create a link in ORACLE_HOME/bin. iDS puts it ORACLE_HOME/oui/bin. iAS 10g FRS used my 9i installer location, and it created a oui.loc file which points to the installer location (which is .../app/oracle/oui/install). Oracle9i (9.2.0.1) creates a link in ORACLE_HOME/bin, but that happened for me - there wasn't anything I had to select or choose during a typical installation.
