    Cool

Have successfully installed 8.1.6 on Windows 2000.
However one of the services(OracleServiceDBNAME) does not start properly. It has a status of starting and I can't start or stop it. As this doesn't start, the local database on the PC won't automatically start.....Any ideas apart from wiping the PC?

delete the service from regedit, bounce the PC. After bounce use lsnrctl in MS-DOS

    lsnrctl start

this should create a brand new service for listener

    Hi,

What you can do it set the service to manual, and then try manually to startup the database using svrmgrl ..connect internal...and startup...

Please let me know how it went...

    Angry

Deleting the service from regedit does not fix the problem.
Luckily I backed up the registry before deleting it or else I would have had to rebuild the PC. The actual listener for the database is running but this specific listening process on Windows2000 is needed for each instance on the machine. If
the process is not running, the PC will not automatically start the database when it boots up. I am familiar with the Oracle Listener but not with this extra listening process on Win2000.
    Any ideas...?

Yes, the OracleSERVICEDBNAME is not the same as the ORACLETNSLISTENER, and the only way you can run a database is to have this running for each instance.

Do you get any errors in the NT Event viewer?

Do you just have the one instance? If not, do others start ok?

You could always use the ORADIM utility to delete and recreate this service and see if that helps.

At last someone on my wavelength!
There is only one instance on this PC, there are no errors
in the event log. I have tried changing the service to be manual and starting it once the PC has booted but this fails
    with a timeout.
I ran ORADIM -DELETE -SRVC OracleServiceDB. Rebooted the PC. then ran ORADIM -NEW -SRVC OracleServiceDB.
this has not yet come back to the prompt in dos and
again the service is now starting but not started....

right your service which is faulty is the database service, i was confused since in your topic you were talking about your listener and that is why i pointed you to delete your listener service which is not big deal, I have done it tons of times.
If the oradim command you are writing is not working, run database assistant create a new database but instead of creating it just generate the scripts, the first batch file will contain syntaxis of oradim to create a new service in Windows.

I can now do an oradim to start the database and service,
however when I reboot the machine it does not start.
I've been told that 128MB RAM is not enough for this PC, since the service+database uses a lot of memory.
I'm currently upgrading the PC to 512MB and I'll try again.
Thanks to everyone for their advice
