    A rare book story !!

In 1981, a fledgling novelist caught the eye of a pulp book publisher in the U.S. with a story of forbidden love on the American frontier. Complete with adultery, incest and more than a little lesbian coupling, the book was racy, earnest and forgettable perfect fodder for the ever-churning dime-store romance mill, where slapdash novels make brief appearances and vanish forever.

But this book, called Sisters, has resurfaced to become the most sought-after out-of-print book in North America, according to Bookfinder.com, which recently listed a copy at $3,000. It's not a testament to the author's literary skill - just ask her. The sudden appetite for Sisters is due entirely to that fledgling author's career arc, from naughty young writer to American conservative political icon. The writer in question is Lynne Cheney. Lynne Cheney, as in, wife of U.S. Vice-President Dick Cheney, whose administration believes gay marriage represents nothing less than the crumbling of Western civilization. Lynne Cheney, whose Republican Party is intimately woven with America's religious right. And lest we forget, Lynne Cheney, whose daughter, Mary, happens to be gay herself. Cheney has had, since 1981, a long productive career as an author of such earnest jingoistic tomes as America: A Patriotic Primer. Sisters is a buried part of her past as a writer, and she intends to keep it there. Only 11 copies exist in the entire American library system.

The publisher's attempt to reissue the novel in the spring was spiked by Cheney's lawyer, who contacted New American Library to let them know it "wasn't her best work," according to the Los Angeles Times.

At least one Internet critic would agree, describing the book on Amazon.com as a "vile book filled with lurid allusions to carnal and unnatural perversion, including but not limited to lusty mammary centric orgies ... truly disgusting!"

But a handful of others don't quite see it that way. Described by Amazon.com as "The novel of a strong and beautiful woman who broke all the rules of the American frontier," one reviewer on the site says Sisters is "sure to please everyone from fun-loving fundamentalist Christians to plaid-flannel dykes.... Lynne proves that even the cutest red dress-wearing Republican lady craves a little gal-on-gal action at times."

For someone desperate to get their hands on the book, few options remain. EBay listed a few copies at about $500 each. Amazon.com listed a copy at $800. One site had an original first printing of the Signet paperback for $25,000 more than a first edition of The Adventures Of Huckleberry Finn.
