    Copying Different oracle versions

My oracle in both PRD and DEV are different. In PRD, it is version 9 while in DEV, it is version 8.1.7 Now I have a request to copy my PRD to my DEV. However, because of the differences in the oracle versions, I have my concerns with the oracle kernel itself. A restore will have no problems if both versions are the same.

I came across this thread http://www.dbasupport.com/forums/sho...2A+and+copy%2A

i will be using the backup/restore method

    Any advise?

Can I ask a relatively simple question?
Why don't you upgrade your dev to reflect your prod? How do you expect to do any good development work if your database doesn't even remotely resemble your prod?
    Oracle it's not just a database it's a lifestyle!

okay , the background of the whole story...

Client has 2 companies, A and B. They want to have a simple disaster planning. A prod to be in B dev and vice versa. However, the oracle version are different.

The first thing that comes to my mind would be character sets. 9i uses a different default set than 8i.
If your servers are basically the same OS then kernel settings shouldn't be a big deal.
I assume you're doing a clone IE= copy datafiles /w control file rename?

okay, what will be the correct procedure then?

    this is a dual process.

    1) PRD (oracle 9) copy to DEV (oracle 8)
    2) DEV (oracle 8) copy to PRD (oracle 9)

Please take note that its not possible to upgrade the DEV to oracle 9 as there are other considerations, to the system landscape itself.

Some questions here... Whats happens after step 1.

    1. Does any development or change take place after step 1 ?
    2. What kind of copy is it ? Are you appending or replacing while copying.
    3. Are you doing any structural changes in schema objects between step 1 and step 2.
    4. In step 2 when you move from DEV to PROD, is it the same DEV to which copy took place in step 1. And is it the same PROD from which the data was copied in step 1.

    1) No development take place
    2) This will be a copy of datafiles
    3) Nope
    4) yes, they are the same but the copy is done through a restore from a backup instead.

my operating system is hpux 11.0
