    Getting the Oracle Version

I am on a HP-UX server. How would I check the version of the Oracle Software installed? I want a detailed Version level information. I know there is a command that one can go to the $ORACLE_HOME/bin directory and type a command and that returns the version and patch level.
    Your input is highly appreciated.

To query v$version, one has to log in to a database.
The question I have is at the Oracle Software level. I know the software loaded is Oracle 8.1.7, but I want to check as to what is the patch level, is it 8.1.7.0 or 8.1.7.4?

goto the oraInventory directory and there you will find logs, then open the last file and in this file you will have the information of all the compnents patched or installed with the version at its end of all components.
