    Type of shutdown

    Hi,

    I have a following question:

When using Windows with Oracle and stop the Oracle Instance using
windows Services Start/Stop the Oracle Database is shutdown.

What kind of shutdown is performed in this case ? (Normal, Immediate,
    Transactional or Abort )

    Thanks

    Hi,

With regards to stop the database via windows services, I set the ORACLE_sid_SHUTDOWNTYPE to n (normal).
Then I stop the database via windows services but it performs the shutdown (abort) as I checked in alert log.

The values of ORA_sid_SHUTDOWN is TRUE and ORA_sid_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT is(30) in my registry.
Could someone please check that matter?
Why it didn’t work after setting the values in registry.

    Thanks

Note that the SID should be replaced with the SID of the DB..

Suppose SID = TEST then reg string values should be ORA_TEST_SHUTDOWN and ORA_TEST_SHUTDOWNTYPE = I or N

Also these values should be in the correct home if you have multiple homes on the server..

    Hi,

    Thanks all of you again.
As you mentioned I set the value n to the associate registry as we discussed earlier and then reboot the machine to make changes take effect.

But this process still perform only shutdown abort , when I stop the instance via windows services.
There is only one instance running on my machine.
    O/s is windows 2000 server.

How should I know that this process only perform shutdown abort, because I checked the alert log file every time after shuting down the instance via windows services.
Something like following written in the alert log:
    crash recovery is going on........

And I think its means that shutdown abort took place.
I think it does'nt work on windows what ever value like (i,a,t,n) set for the registry type which we discusssed earlier.
Could you please confirm that matter and give me your suggestion?

    Thanks

Have you tried to find out in the documentation what is the meaning of the registry key ORA_sid_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT?

You say you have it set to ORA_sid_SHUTDOWN_TIMEOUT = 30 and that your ORACLE_sid_SHUTDOWNTYPE is set to "n". This combination means that service will first try to perform normal shutdown and will wait for 30 seconds. If it recieves the signal within those 30 seconds that the database was successfully shutted down, the service will terminate itself. If shutdown process could not be completed in 30 seconds, the service will perform shutdown abort and then terminate itself.

If there is any session connected to your database when you try to stop the service then it is no wonder that shutdown abort is taking place....

Why reboot? That is totally unnecessary.
