upgrade oracle 8.1.7 to 9.2, with backup filesystem

hi, i am in the midst of doing an oracle update as suggested by my subject post. In addition, i am thinking of
doing a copy of all my sapdata, /oracle/SID and related files, directories to another place. This is so that when
my upgrade fails, i can always copy these "copied stuff" back and i get my oracle 8.1.7 back instantly.

    what is your opinion?

why not just do a backup, always a chance you will miss something doing it your way

Take a full backup before you upgrade. Also keep your 8.1.7 Oracle Home intact until your upgrade and testing finish.
If something goes wrong you can put the things back in a short time.

agreed... i will do a backup. but at the same time, i will do a exact replica of my filesystems in my logical volumes.

my question is that will these replicas be used to reset my database back to the original if necessary?

Yes. provided the files are consistent.

Thus this means that the db must be offline to do the replicas of the filesystems of the logical volumes? Because a full backup can be done in both ONLINE and OFFLINE. But I think the replicas will not work if the DB is ONLINE, that is why perhaps, SANJAY_G mentioned that the files should be consistent.

hmmm, i replied this as to discuss and not to argue..

the datafiles will be consistent when the tablespaces are put in begin backup mode.

of course, there could be some gaps in the 2 databases depending on when the upgrade and when the replication is done, right?

but otherwise, the understanding and concepts that we have been discussing should work well...

    hello yls117,
My apologies if it gives you an impression that I am trying to make an
argument out of this. But honestly I am just trying to confirm here
what I know, if still it is or out of date. But I am sure we're ok yls117.
I only ask those question because of this quote:

no worries.... i am fine with it... i am learing from u either

    /usr/sap/SID
    /sapmnt/SID
    /oracle/SID
    /oracle/SID/sapreorg
    /oracle/SID/sapdata6
    /oracle/SID/sapdata5
    /oracle/SID/sapdata4
    /oracle/SID/sapdata3
    /oracle/SID/sapdata2
    /oracle/SID/sapdata1
    /oracle/SID/saparch
    /oracle/SID/origlogB
    /oracle/SID/origlogA
    /oracle/SID/mirrlogB
    /oracle/SID/mirrlogA

These are what i meant by SID? so basically, these are the existing oracle filesystems. I was posting that if we have a backup of all these, then if something went amiss while upgrading, then i could have them back without a restore, though a restore will do the same.

    what is your opinion?
